A Look at South Baltimore Real Estate Market Stats

$

0

Let’s take a look at some South Baltimore real estate stats via Redfin.

The following is a look at the median real estate sale price over the past year for the different South Baltimore neighborhoods that Redfin calculates. Each median statistic is a 90-day average calculated by Redfin that ends on the last day of the stated month. As highlighted in SouthBMore.com’s coverage of South Baltimore real estate, in many of these neighborhoods you can find properties listed for less than $250,000 and near or more than $1,000,000. While high-end sales can bring the median up, “shells” (or properties in need of a complete rehab) can bring the median down.

Given that, the following numbers should be taken with a grain of salt, but do provide an interesting overview of South Baltimore real estate.

Federal Hill

Median March 2016 – $318,000

Median March 2015 – $276,000

Highest Median in last 12 Months: $378,000 – January 2017

Otterbein

Median March 2016 – $257,000

Median March 2015 – $246,000

Highest Median in last 12 Months: $360,000 – November 2016

South Baltimore Neighborhood

Median March 2016 – $302,000

Median March 2015 – $276,000

Highest Median in last 12 Months: $325,000 – December 2016

Federal Hill South/Riverside

Median March 2016 – $310,000

Median March 2015 – $310,000

Highest Median in last 12 Months: $337,000 – May 2016

Locust Point

Median March 2016 – $365,000

Median March 2015 – $405,000

Highest Median in last 12 Months: $415,000 – May 2016

Hollins Market

Median March 2016 – $39,000

Median March 2015 – $63,000

Highest Median in last 12 Months: $98,000 – January 2017

Pigtown

Median March 2016 – $93,000

Median March 2015 – $42,000

Highest Median in last 12 Months: $129,000 – July 2016

If you look at the number of home sales for these areas, the most sales occurred during the summer months and the least in the winter. Given that, we are likely approaching an active time in the market.

Inventory was also the highest in the summer, but has been steadily going down since that time. If inventory remains low, but interest increases again, jumps in value can be expected.

According to Redfin, there are currently 2,469 Redfin users looking at homes in the 21230 zip code and the median listing price is $294,250.

Torrey Smith and Wife Cover Adoption Fees at BARCS

Former Ravens’ Wide Receiver and current Philadelphia Eagle Torrey Smith and his wife Chanel have decided to cover the adoption fee for all 46 animals featured in BARCS’ Pawject Runway. From BARCS Facebook Page:

Last night at the conclusion of the runway show, Torrey took to the mic to address the crowd. Each year he reminds us all what this glamorous and grand event is all about—raising money and awareness for Baltimore’s homeless, neglected and abused animals. It’s safe to say that Torrey’s spirited and full-of-heart conclusion to the show is always a crowd-favorite moment.

This year, Torrey surprised us all with a special announcement. He explained that before the show, he and his wife Chanel were discussing what more they could do for all the homeless animals they spent time with backstage. They wanted to make sure that every single one of them had an adoption application by the end of the night. Torrey and Chanel decided that they would cover the adoption fees for every single cat and dog at Pawject Runway—46 animals, wow!

The Smith family went above and beyond, making an extra donation on top of each animals’ adoption fees. It was the best finale we could ask for.

Thank you, Torrey and Chanel, for always looking out for Baltimore’s homeless dogs and cats and having such a big heart for our city.

Tomorrow, we will announce the total amount raised at Pawject Runway. As for today, everyone get some much-needed rest, and thank you all for making the 5th Annual Pawject Runway a lifesaving success.

New Arena and Convention Center Study

A new Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA) study is set to begin to examine the future of the Baltimore Convention Center, including a potential renovation and new arena. From Baltimore Business Journal:

The MSA board gave the nod for the work to the local architectural firm Ayres Saint Gross, which will lead a team of experts from several U.S. cities to study four possibilities for the 1.225 million square foot facility: Whether the center should expand and be renovated, merged with a new version of the aged Royal Farms Arena, expanded with a new hotel component or all of the options put together, said Gary A. McGuigan, the vice president of the Stadium Authority.

The MSA board also voted to spend $25,000 to hire Clark Construction Group LLC of Bethesda as a construction manager for the convention center project and Crossroads Consulting under a $58,000 contract to review other facets such as the market, economic and business operations of a renovated and redeveloped convention center. A total of seven firms submitted proposals for the work, McGuigan said, and recommendations are expected by the end of the year.

Ritz Condo Sold for $1.92 Million

According Baltimore Business Journal, a Ritz-Carlton Residences condominium at 801 Key Hwy. (Suite #310) sold for $1.92 million. This was the seventh highest home sale in April in the Baltimore area.

The most expensive home sale in the Baltimore area in March, according to Baltimore Business Journal, was a $3.6 million unit at the Ritz-Carlton Residences (Unit #P36).

The highest home sale this year in South Baltimore was a $6.25 million pier townhome at HarborView.

Sagamore Spirit Official Rye of the Preakness

Port Covington’s Sagamore Spirit has been named the exclusive rye whiskey for Preakness weekend. From a press release:

For the second year in a row, Sagamore Spirit Straight Rye Whiskey will be the exclusive rye whiskey at Pimlico Race Course for Black-Eyed Susan Day on Friday, May 19, and Preakness Day on Saturday, May 20. The announcement comes right off the heels of last month’s opening of Sagamore Spirit’s state of the art, waterfront distillery in Port Covington.  May 20 is also World Whiskey Day, in which fans celebrate their love of whiskey the third Saturday in May, each year across the globe.

“Preakness is Maryland’s greatest day, and we’re thrilled to support it with the Spirit of Sagamore,” said Brian Treacy, President of Sagamore Spirit. “It’s fitting that Preakness Saturday falls on World Whiskey Day this year.  Maryland has a rich history of horse racing and distilling rye whiskey, and with the opening of our new distillery, we are proud to celebrate both during Preakness Weekend.”

Sagamore Spirit Straight Rye Whiskey will be available at all full bars in the Grandstand where guests can sip on refreshing Ginger and Rye.  Corporate Village will feature music, lawn games, a photo booth and free Black Eyed Ryes and Maryland Mules made with Sagamore Spirit’s Straight Rye Whiskey.  These cocktails will also be available for purchase at Turfside Terrace all weekend long.

Under Armour Potentially Nearing Fortune 500

Under Armour is now the greater Baltimore area’s largest company, according to Baltimore Business Journal. It passed McCormick & Co., T. Rowe Price Group Inc., and Colfax Corp. in 2016 with $4.8 billion in revenue. From the article:

Under Armour’s revenue grew 22 percent from $3.96 billion in 2015. This year it projects boosting sales by 11 percent to 12 percent to $5.4 billion.

In the first quarter, Under Armour’s first-quarter revenue rose 7 percent to $1.1 billion and in line with analysts’ estimates. During a conference call with analysts, CEO Kevin Plank reaffirmed Under Armour’s goal of getting to $10 billion and said the company is “going to play offense this year.”

“We’re definitely not going to stand still, and we certainly don’t like going backwards,” Plank said.

It remains unclear whether 21-year-old Under Armour will crack this year’s Fortune 500, a list in which Baltimore has not had a presence on since the sale of Constellation Energy Group in 2012. Burlington Stores was No. 500 last year with $5.1 billion in revenue and reported $5.6 billion for the most recent fiscal year.

JR’s Bar & Grill in Locust Point Now The Port Public House

$

John T. Chenery purchased JR’s Bar & Grill three years ago and, after a few years of renovations and changes, he has renamed it The Port Public House.

“We have a lot of longshoremen customers and when their wives ask where they are, they can say they are at The Port,” Chenery joked to SouthBMore.com. The first floor has a longshoremen theme with many pictures of the Port of Baltimore.

JR’s was owned by the Armstrong family and was named for the late JR Armstrong who passed away in 2010. Chenery is an Army veteran and also owns a federal contracting company called Veteran Solutions, Inc., which works with veterans.

Chenery told SouthBMore.com that he’s trying to keep up with the changing demographic in Locust Point. “We are trying to create an environment where old and new Locust Point can mesh,” he said.

The building underwent a renovation, including updates to the first floor and kitchen with added dining space and new televisions. The second floor was also turned into a game room with sports bar feel. The second floor includes pool tables, skeeball, darts, and high-top tables. This space is also available for private parties and used to host events for kids.  There is also a third floor where The Port has an office and holds meetings.

The first floor bar now features a larger selection of wines and whiskeys. The Port also rotates in many craft beers on its eight draft lines. The Port has a daily happy hour, Orioles game drink and food specials, Tuesday Trivia night, and Wine Wednesday.

Chef Sebastien Trossbach has been running the kitchen for more than a year after leaving a position at Sullivan’s Steakhouse. Popular menu items include cheesesteaks, shrimp po’ boys, crab cakes, fajitas, soft pretzels, and fish tacos. The Port is also launching a new entrée menu that will focus on Mexican plates. Chenery also wanted to make sure they added some “heart healthy” items including salads and healthier sandwiches.

The Port is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, and opens for breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. The Port has a staff of 16 and the General Manager is Chris Allison. Chenery’s daughter Alicia is also part of the ownership team and Jessica Mainhart is Chenery’s Executive Assistant and assists with The Port’s social media.

The Port has a capacity of 135 and hopes to have outdoor seating in the future. Chenery told SouthBMore.com he is also hoping to open a location “across the water” in Southeast Baltimore in the future.

Chenery, who is originally from Southern California, told SouthBMore.com he has fallen in love with the Locust Point community and that he is hoping to meet more people in the area. “If you haven’t been here in a while, come by and give us a shot,” said Chenery.

GBC Calls Cutbacks of Baltimore Police Funding “Troubling”

The Greater Baltimore Committee (GBC), which describes itself as “the region’s premier organization of business and civic leaders” that “has been a leading voice for the business community on issues relating to economic growth, job creation, workforce development, transportation and quality of life,” has written a letter to the Baltimore City Council calling the proposed $5.5 million decrease in the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) “troubling.” From the letter:

The public consensus, shared by the Greater Baltimore Committee, is that the city should be investing more in our city’s children than in law enforcement – an investment that will serve to provide opportunities for educational advancement and career options that will form a foundation to refrain from criminal activities.

But for a city experiencing historic levels of violence, reducing the city’s commitment to crime fighting is troubling.

Over the past several years, the police department has seen a significant decline in the number of sworn officers. Despite an accelerated hiring strategy, attrition continues to outpace hiring, frequently forcing officers to endure overtime shifts to ensure daily patrol needs are met. Detective case loads are nearly triple industry standards. Homicides are 41 percent higher than at this time last year while violent crime and street robbery are each up 20 percent. A simple comparison of the number of sworn officers to the number of homicides over the past several fiscal years tells a stark tale of decreasing police presence and increasing violence. This trend cannot continue.

A reduction of even $5.5 million from the police department’s budget is likely to severely hamper law enforcement strategies and services at a time when we need renewed efforts to ensure not only more effective policing but also have the need to expend additional resources to comply with the important commitments made in the Consent Decree.

Large Middle Branch Property on the Market

Gold and Company, LLC recently listed a 4.9-acre industrial property, which is occupied by approximately 10,000 sq. ft. of buildings, on the market for $2.2 million. The property is located at 2924 Waterview Ave. and also includes the addresses of 1706 and 1710 Cherry Hill Ave.

The property is across the street from Middle Branch Park and is adjacent to a recently-sold, 3.1-acre site at 2940 Waterview Ave. James Chivers of Gold and Company told SouthBMore.com that the adjacent property is undergoing “major” improvements and is available for a tenant.

Gervonta Davis Signs with Under Armour

Former Digital Harbor student and IBF Junior Lightweight Champion boxer Gervonta Davis has signed with Under Armour. Davis can be seen on Under Armour billboards that rise above I-95 in Baltimore. From The Baltimore Sun:

“Baltimore’s Own,” reads the sign in oversized block lettering alongside his name, “World Champion Boxer” and the logo of Under Armour, which announced Wednesday that it has signed the undefeated fighter to an endorsement deal.

Davis smiled broadly when he saw it. The International Boxing Federation champion is 18-0 with 17 knockouts and has now taken out Michael Phelps — not in the ring, but on a pair of local billboards that long featured pictures of the Olympic swimming champion.

Also from the article:

“Our I-95 billboards are our hometown heroes,” said Adrienne Lofton, the Baltimore-based apparel and footwear company’s senior vice president for global brand management. “We look for the next best talent all over the world. So being a young athlete from Baltimore, we knew about him.”

Port of Baltimore Sets Record, Plans To Expand

The Port of Baltimore continues to grow. From Baltimore Business Journal:

Cargo intake at the Port of Baltimore increased 4.8 percent in the first quarter on the way to setting a new record.

The port brought in 2.56 million tons of general cargo first quarter, up from 2.4 million tons in the same period last year. General cargo includes cars, containers, farm and construction machinery, forest products and breakbulk.

A 6 percent increase in cars and an 8 percent increase in containers drove the overall growth in cargo.

The Port is also moving forward on an expansion. From The Baltimore Sun:

For the first time in 30 years, the Maryland Port Administration has acquired land to accommodate growing business.

The port administration announced Tuesday that it has completed the purchase of Point Breeze Business Center near Seagirt Marine Terminal in Southeast Baltimore in a $55 million deal that will expand Seagirt’s footprint to 356 acres.

The acquisition is symbolic of a reversal of fortunes for the port of Baltimore, which in recent decades has struggled to remain competitive with larger East Coast ports in New York and Norfolk, Va.

The port now needs extra land to help handle the growing volume of containerized cargo it’s been seeing since the expansion of the Panama Canal. The widened canal gave the super-sized container ships carrying Asian-manufactured goods a more direct route to U.S. East Coast ports beginning last summer.

Healthy Harbor Report Card Shows Water Off Fort McHenry is Swimmable 89% of the Time

$
0
0

The Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore’s Healthy Harbor Initiative, in partnership with Blue Water Baltimore, recently released the 2016 Healthy Harbor Report Card. While the overall grades for the water quality of the harbor remain poor, there are some improvements as well as some interesting results.

The report card, which grades the health of four distinct waterways in Baltimore and the surrounding counties, revealed failing grades for the Baltimore Harbor, tidal portion of the Patapsco River, and Jones Falls. The Gwynns Falls received a D-, passing for a second year.

From the report:

The biggest change in 2016 was the improvement in fecal bacteria scores in the Baltimore Harbor and Tidal Patapsco River. Despite the millions of gallons of sewage that overflowed from the City’s failing infrastructure, monitoring sites in the Harbor showed fecal bacteria scores improved by an average of 32 points compared to 2015. More data is needed to know if these improvements are part of a larger trend.

According to the report, most of Baltimore’s water problems are attributed to fecal bacteria, storm-induced pollution problems, and low water clarity. The report stresses the importance of repairing and upgrading the storm drain and sewer system as quickly as possible.

Bluewater Baltimore is getting proactive in identifying Baltimore’s infrastructure issues. From the report:

In 2016, Blue Water Baltimore trained 72 volunteers and manually surveyed 78 stormwater outfalls along twelve miles of the Stony Run, Western Run, Herring Run and Jones Falls streams. 24 samples were found to contain wash water, eight contained drinking water, and 13 contained sewage.

These findings were reported to DPW where, with the help of cutting- edge technology provided by Ridge to Reefs and funding from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, staff tracked down pollution sources more accurately than ever before. According to a DPW report, the agency carried out 71 pollution investigations resulting in the elimination of 26 sources in 2014. With help from Blue Water Baltimore, those numbers jumped dramatically in 2015, when 244 investigations resulted in the elimination of 90 pollution sources, and a further 103 pollution sources in 2016. By directing DPW to specific outfalls the City is able to reduce water pollution in the most cost effective way, freeing up resources for more pressing infrastructure issues.

The Baltimore Department of Public Works is becoming proactive in seeking out smaller problems before they become massive headaches and ensuring that repairs address underlying issues, not just their consequences. Such was the case with three large sinkholes that formed in West Baltimore and Mount Vernon when sections of a seven-foot sewer pipe collapsed, carrying away streets and utilities.

In the past, DPW would have done smaller repairs at each location. This time, however, DPW addressed the root of the cause by going both behind and ahead of the sinkholes to do a complete relining of the pipe; essentially building a new pipe within the old one. The project cost close to $20 million, but this fix will prevent more expensive sinkholes from forming in the future.

DPW also works to find sewage sources within the storm drain system.

Another improvement has been the addition of water wheels that intercept trash before it enters the harbor. Mr. Trash Wheel was added at the end of 2014 where the Jones Falls meets the Inner Harbor. In 2016, Mr. Trash Wheel collected 163 tons of trash, 181,548 Styrofoam containers, and 1,919,600 cigarette butts. This is down from 239 tons of trash in 2015. The report offered a few guesses for the decrease, including the City’s implementation of near-citywide street sweeping and the distribution of municipal trash cans.

Baltimore now has a second trash wheel at the mouth of the Harris Creek in Canton. Thanks to more than 600 donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations in 36 states and eight countries, according to the report, Professor Trash Wheel was fully funded and installed in December 2016.

Another key source of trash flow into the harbor, especially in the Middle Branch, is the Gwynns Falls. The South Baltimore Gateway Partnership, which is funded by casino Local Impact Grants from Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, Maryland Live, and MGM Grand National Harbor; and Sagamore Development have both pledged funding towards this wheel.  The Gwynns Falls watershed collects runoff from Reisterstown down into South Baltimore.

The swimming grades also showed some interesting results. When studying fecal bacteria standard for swimming, the report showed that while the Inner Harbor water near Federal Hill and Fells Point is only swimmable 20% of the time, the water right outside Fort McHenry is swimmable 89% of the time. The Middle Branch water comes in at 38% and the water off the tip of Port Covington at 75%. The water beyond the Key Bridge is swimmable 100% of the time.

Image from the 2016 Healthy Harbor Report Card

“2016 was an exciting year for water quality in Baltimore,” said Adam Lindquist, director of the Healthy Harbor Initiative. “We installed a second trash wheel, collected our 1 millionth pound of trash from the water, and hosted the first ever paddling rally in the Inner Harbor, the Floatilla for a Healthy Harbor. People are ready for a truly recreational Harbor, and it’s up to all of us to continue working on these and other important projects until our grades improve.”

“The 2016 report card is a call to action for anyone and everyone who cares about the environmental health of Baltimore,” said Carl Simon, interim executive director at Blue Water Baltimore.  “It is imperative that we continue this long-term assessment of our waterways while taking urgent action to scale up the investments to Baltimore’s infrastructure.”

Anthem House Adding New Key Highway Mural Honoring Edgar Allen Poe, Francis Scott Key, and Billie Holiday

Anthem House, the $100-million redevelopment of a former GE site at 900 E. Fort Ave. in Locust Point, is adding a new mural along the building’s wall facing Key Hwy. The mural is being painted by Annapolis-based artist Jeff Huntington.

Mural rendering courtesy of Jeff Huntington

The mural pays homage to notable Baltimoreans Edgar Allen Poe, Francis Scott Key, and Billie Holiday.

“They are painted in black and white while colorful Maryland and American flags provide contrasting background imagery,” the team at Anthem House told SouthBMore.com. “There are hexagons throughout this mural which are each made up of four pentagrams. These add movement and modernity to the piece, as well as provide a subtle nod to the nearby Fort McHenry, which is also in the shape of a pentagram.”

Anthem House also has an interior mural of Holiday in the lobby. It features a portrait of the musician with areas of color and areas of black and white, along with hibiscus flowers superimposed throughout.

“I am honored to have been chosen to work on this project and to have been entrusted to assemble a team of amazing artists,” said Huntington in a statement provided to SouthBMore.com. “Public art has the potential to unite communities and create a sense of pride in one’s environment, and it’s a privilege to have a hand in that kind of value, to leave my own mark on future history now.”

Anthem House, which is nearing completion, will include 292 apartments, 449 parking spaces, and 20,000 sq. ft. of ground floor retail. The leasing office opened in May and some tenants have already moved into the building. The Bar Method has announced a 3,000 sq. ft. fitness studio at Anthem House and Amber has announced a 2,000 sq. ft. restaurant. Both are projected to open in the Fall.

The project is a partnership between Bozzuto, War Horse, and Solstice Partners.

Construction Begins at Anthem House II, a 52-Unit Apartment Building in Riverside

$
0
0

Construction has started on Anthem House II (A2) at 1430 Lawrence St. in Riverside. Anthem House II will be a five-story, 52-unit apartment building at the site of the former Rallo’s Restaurant parking lot. The project is a partnership between Bozzuto Development Company, Solstice Partners, and War Horse Cities.

A2 is across the street from Anthem House, the $100-million redevelopment of a former GE site at 900 E. Fort Ave. by the same team. Anthem House will include 292 apartments, 449 parking spaces, and 20,000 sq. ft. of ground floor retail. The leasing office opened in May and some tenants have already moved into the building. The Bar Method has announced a 3,000 sq. ft. fitness studio at Anthem House and Amber has announced a 2,000 sq. ft. restaurant.

A2’s 52 units will include “small studios” and two-bedroom apartments. Residents at A2 will be able to park at a 17-car parking garage in the building and in the parking garage at Anthem House. The lobby to A2 will be directly across the street from the parking lobby of Anthem House.

The new building will feature a setback of up to 25 ft. facing the alley on Boyle St. and a nine-foot setback facing Lawrence St. New landscaping and trees will be planted around the perimeter of the building. New angled parking will be added along Lawrence St. The team stated at a Riverside Neighborhood Association meeting in 2016 that one of the primary goals of the project was to improve the walkability of Lawrence St. and to “activate it.”

A2 is designed by David Baker Architects of San Francisco and the streetscaping around the project will be designed by Baltimore’s Mahan Rykiel.

A2 is expected to open in approximately 13 months.

“In partnership with War Horse Cities and Solstice Partners, we are thrilled to have begun construction at A2, a smaller boutique redeveloping that will add further diversity of product-type and pricing to the Anthem House community,” said Jeff Kayce, senior vice president and managing director of Bozzuto Development Company, to SouthBMore.com. “Located on the west side of Lawrence Street, A2 will better weave together the pedestrian experience between Federal Hill and Locust point.”

A townhouse development was presented for this property several years ago by a different developer, but never moved forward.

The development team also owns the former Rallo’s Restaurant at 838 E. Fort Ave. and the two adjacent rowhomes at 834 and 832 E. Fort Ave. The buildings will be renovated as part of the project. The former Rallo’s space acquired and successfully transferred the liquor license from Thorton’s Pub in 2015.

Bozzuto and War Horse have also partnered on Alta 47, a 47-townhome project in Locust Point that is currently under construction.

The South Baltimore Little League 10-11 all-star team, that competes in the Minor League Baseball Division, won the District 4 Championship for the first time in 11 years this past weekend. They defeated Laurel 2-0 in a three-game series with 10-3 and 11-5 victories.

South Baltimore now heads to the double elimination Maryland State Little League tournament on July 22nd in Easton where they will compete for the state championship against eight other teams.

The team is coached by Tom Fortman who is a neighborhood resident, a former Digital Harbor High School coach, and the father of Keegan Fortman, a catcher for the South Baltimore 10-11 team. The last time South Baltimore won District 4, Fortman’s older son Tommy was on the team. Fortman has been involved with South Baltimore Little League for 30 years. The players celebrated the District Championship by dumping a cooler of water on Fortman.

Fortman told SouthBMore.com all 13 members of the team contributed in the series win and all of them attend Federal Hill Prep, Francis Scott Key, or Thomas Johnson. Jackson Dungee was the winning pitcher in Game 1, and Drew Webb got the save. Dungee also hit a home run in the second game.

William Walton pitched a complete game to get the win in Game 2. Fortman told SouthBMore.com that it was the first playoff complete game he has witnessed as there is an 85 pitch limit in the six-inning games. Andrew Webb led the team in hitting and defense, according to Fortman.

Fortman said the state tournament will be a huge step up in competition, but the team in confident. “It’s not only a great group of kids, but a great group of parents,” said Fortman. He noted that parents spent two hours getting the field ready for competition over the weekend following rain.

The 11-12 division, the Major League Baseball Division, competes for the Little League World Series. South Baltimore did not field a team this year, but will in the future.

The South Baltimore 9-10 all-star team took second place in District 4. The senior all-stars (13-16) will also compete in the state tournament.

Fortman told SouthBMore.com the number of players and the level of talent at South Baltimore Little League has increased in the last few years. Fortman, who will be moving to South Carolina with his family at the end of the summer, said, “To go out with this group of kids and parents is pretty special.”

South Baltimore Neighborhoods Selected for 2018 Light City Art Projects

Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts Release:

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts seeks qualified artists, artist teams, and/or arts organizations to submit qualifications for the public artist-in-residency program, Neighborhood Lights. Neighborhood Lights is an immersive community arts program that spreads the magic of Light City to neighborhoods throughout Baltimore City. Selected artists will work directly with one of 12 participating neighborhoods to create an illuminated public project within the neighborhood of their residency. Neighborhood Lights 2018 kicks off the weekend of April 6-8, 2018 with many neighborhood projects potentially on extended view through Light City, which takes place at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor from April 14-21, 2018.

The twelve participating neighborhoods for 2018 are: Baybrook/Curtis Bay, Belair-Edison, Bromo Tower Arts & Entertainment District, Federal Hill, Hamilton-Lauraville, Highlandtown, Hollins Roundhouse/Southwest Baltimore, Locust Point, Patterson Park, Pigtown/Washington Village, Remington and Waverly. For more information on the neighborhoods, view the neighborhood profiles on www.lightcity.org.

Projects will be fully funded up to $15,000. If selected, artists will be responsible for working with their neighborhood to: identify sites for a public outcome, canvas the community to identify goals, shape project scope and identify potential collaborators, conduct community art-making workshop(s) and work with the community and BOPA to develop a project budget. Applications can be found on www.lightcity.org.  The deadline to apply is Monday, August 21, 2017.

Though the artist(s) and community members will ultimately decide the public outcome and specific sites for each project through the residency itself, projects can include but are not limited to: large-scale projections, full-scale neighborhood installations, window based projections and installations, illuminated public sculptures or monuments, performances, special events, celebrations and/or new traditions that integrate light. Works can be performative and/or visual, temporary or semi-permanent, in sites ranging from front stoops to vacant lots. All projects funded through the neighborhood lights program must be accessible, free and open to the public.

Light City is a free festival that transforms Baltimore with large-scale light installations, performances, music and innovation. Central to Light City is the BGE Light Art Walk along Baltimore’s waterfront, featuring more than 50 attractions including illuminated sculptures, projections, interactive technologies, performances, concerts, food vendors and a children’s area. During the day, Light City’s innovation conferences bring together innovators and thought leaders across key industries to explore ways to power social change. For more information on Neighborhood Lights or Light City, call 410-752-8632 or visit www.lightcity.org.
