Anthem House Celebrates its Grand Opening

0
0

Anthem House celebrated its grand opening last night, showing off the new $100-million Locust Point building to neighbors, media, and friends and family of the project team. The development team is a partnership between Bozzuto, War Horse Cities, and Solstice Partners. The property was formerly a General Electric site and a retail building.

The nine-story building, which is now 99% complete according to Bozzuto, includes 292 apartments, 449 parking spaces, and 20,000 sq. ft. of ground floor retail. The retail will include a 3,000 sq. ft. fitness studio for The Bar Method, a 2,000 sq. ft. coffee and craft beer restaurant named Amber, and a Korean fried chicken restaurant and bar named Jazz + Soju. More retail tenants will be announced in the future.

Anthem House’s resident amenities include a terrace with a pool overlooking the harbor; a large, elevated park space overlooking Fort Ave. and the Port of Baltimore; many common spaces including a fourth-story club room; a large fitness center; and a dog run.

The building also features murals by Annapolis-based artist Jeff Huntington. There is a large mural of Billie Holliday in the lobby, and a mural of Holliday, Francis Scott Key, and Edgar Allen Poe along Key Hwy.

Anthem House was described by Thomas S. Bozzuto, chairman of The Bozzuto Group, as “maybe the fastest-leasing building in the history of the company.” The Bozzuto Group has been in existence for three decades and includes more than 65,000 residences. The team told SouthBMore.com that about 100 apartment leases have been signed.

Scott Plank of War Horse told SouthBMore.com the amenity spaces were designed to attract many types of tenants including families. He also noted the work of his non-profit with Francis Scott Key Elementary Middle School to improve family living in Locust Point.

Fort McHenry Release:

STAR-SPANGLED BANNER WEEKEND COMMEMORATES DEFENDERS’ DAY
IN BALTIMORE AT FORT MCHENRY, SEPTEMBER 8-10, 2017

Public invited to celebrate Maryland’s own special holiday “Defenders’ Day” and remember the centennial of the US entering World War I

WHAT:  STAR-SPANGLED BANNER WEEKEND!

Commemorates Defenders’ Day, Baltimore’s oldest holiday, which honors the successful defense of the city from British attack and the writing of the National Anthem in 1814!

  • Highlights include:  Large fireworks display, symbolic ship-to-shore “bombardment,” and living history programs! Plus a patriotic evening concert by the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and daytime performances by the US Army 3rdInfantry Regiment “The Old Guard”.
  • Fort McHenry was used as a major hospital for returning soldiers during World War I – This year marks the 100thanniversary of the United States entering the “Great War”. There will be a special WWI living history encampment alongside the War of 1812 encampment.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

  • Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.: The Fort McHenry Guard and otherliving historians along with a contingent of National Park Service Rangers in their distinctive “green & gray” will muster at the foot of Hull Street in Locust Point and parade a replica of the “Star-Spangled Banner” flag from Hull Street to Fort Avenue to Fort McHenry. Local residents and visitors will be invited to “find their park” by cheering the procession and waving flags as they pass by.  The park’s main entrance gates close at 5 p.m.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 & 10

  • Fort McHenry comes alive! Events include a large Word War I and 1814-style military encampment featuring drills, cooking demonstrations, and musket firing.  Family-oriented activities include a dress parade, children’s programs, cannon firing, and raising of the giant 30 x 42-foot Star-Spangled Banner flag.
  • All weekend long, children entering the Star Fort’s 1814 barracks have the opportunity to try on replica historic clothing and also be able to “enlist” as a soldier of the War of 1812 and even experience a bit of a soldier’s life during the War of 1812 by learning authentic drill commands and use wooden muskets. Children will also have the opportunity to participate in common active games of the early 19thcentury!
  • Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. – Active-duty Soldiers from The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) will uniquely blend traditional military customs and courtesies with live-action pageantry that showcases military discipline, historical reenactments, and traditional and modern music.  This one-hour patriotic journey captures 242 years of the Army’s history spanning across generations of men and women who have answered the call to uphold America’s freedom and democracy on the Fort McHenry ground.
  • Saturday, Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. honors the bravery of the men and women of Baltimore during both the War of 1812 and World War I.  The evening begins with greetings by public dignitaries and music of the Fort McHenry Guard Fife & Drum Corps.  The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” will perform Tchaikovsky’s “Overture 1812” alongside patriotic favorites by John Philip Sousa featuring The U.S. Army Concert Band, Chorus and Herald Trumpets. The performance will conclude with a bang – literally! The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) Presidential Salute Battery will fire 75mm blank shells with one-and-a half pounds of gunpowder. As dusk settles, a symbolic ship-to-shore bombardment will take place as pyrotechnic “bombs” are fired over the fort.  The evening program concludes with the singing of the National Anthem and a 20-minute fireworks display.  The evening program is free! Sign Language Interpreters will be provided. Patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for a memorable evening!

Park Event Hours: Friday:  9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Sunday 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Formstone Removal on Fort Ave. Reveals Old Murals

0
0

Red brick rowhomes in Baltimore began getting covered in Formstone, a stucco faux-stone material, in the middle of the 20th century. But, in recent decades, Formstone has been removed from thousands of these homes. This process is typically followed by brick restoration which includes acid washing and repointing. If you live in South Baltimore, you’ve most likely seen this happen countless times. It is often part of a full-home renovation.

Recent Formstone removal on two corner-unit rowhome renovations on Fort Ave. revealed old murals.

CL Ventures is undertaking a renovation of 1500 E. Fort Ave. in Locust Point. Owners Lisa Julio and Chevelle Welsh found a large mural facing Hull St. The mural is an advertisement for The Barn Restaurant, a former Glen Burnie restaurant and event space that burned down in 1974.

Welsh told SouthBMore.com that the community loves the look of the vintage mural, but that she and Julio will be going in a different direction with it. Since The Barn has no history with the site or Locust Point, they will be replacing it with a vintage-style mural. It will either honor the former confectionery Gallagher’s, which once made its home at the building, or Under Armour which is at the other end of Hull St. Welsh told SouthBMore.com she will be reaching out to Under Armour about this possibility.

CL Ventures is undertaking a four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom luxury renovation on the property. It will include a third-story addition, a wine cellar, and a new one-car garage. The garage will have doors on each side so a second car can drive through and park in the adjacent back patio. There will additionally be an au pair suite above the garage. The property will be about 2,500 sq. ft. when completed and will be priced between $750,000 and $800,000.

Kenny Klotz of Klotz Complete Contracting and Michael Perry are renovating 634 E. Fort Ave. in Riverside and found two murals underneath the brick wall facing Webster St. The first is a mural for a pharmacy which was run by Dr. Sylvan J. Sollod from 1942-1990. Neighborhood residents called the pharmacy Sollod’s. Along with filling prescriptions, Sollod’s sold “sundries,” ice cream, and sodas. Sollod’s wife Marian Sollod told The Baltimore Sun in 1990 that “we couldn’t have made it without the soda fountain; it was the busiest part of the store.”

The wall also has a mural for Hendler Ice Cream, which is labeled as a “Family Treat.” The ice cream was also sold at Sollod’s. Hendler closed its large creamery at 1100 E. Baltimore St. in Jonestown in 1970s. A new 296-unit apartment building with 20,000 sq. ft. of first floor retail is now proposed for the E. Baltimore St. property which was constructed in 1892.

After Sollod’s closed, Earl’s Old Malt Shop opened in the retail space along with a beauty parlor in the rear of the building. The space has been without a retail tenant in recent years.

Klotz grew up in Locust Point going to Sollod’s and later Earl’s. He also went to Dr. Aaron C. Sollod, the brother of Dr. Sylvan J. Sollod, who had an office on the same block. When Klotz noticed there was murals underneath the Formstone, he immediately told his brick restoration contractor to leave them and work around them.

Klotz and his team will be restoring the murals. “Knowing it’s a part of the history of the neighborhood, I’m a stickler for them staying,” said Klotz. He noted it will be up to the new owner if they want them removed. He is hoping someone has a picture of the murals from their heyday so he can recreate them as accurately as possible.

The building also has a steel turret and a steeple. Both will be restored and new slate tiles will be added to the steeple.

Klotz and Perry’s renovation of 635 E. Fort Ave. will include a new one-car garage, a third-story addition, a finished basement, and high-end finishes throughout. When completed, it will have five bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms, and more than 2,600 sq. ft. It will be listed for $700,000-plus.

Under Armour Laying Off 140 Baltimore Employees Amid Restructuring Plan

0
0

South Baltimore’s Under Armour will be laying off 280 total employees, including 140 Baltimore-based employees, as part of a restructuring plan. The company has 3,500 Baltimore employees and a total of 15,000 around the world. The restructuring plan comes amid Under Armour’s net loss of $12 million in the second quarter of 2017.

Under Armour said the following in a statement:

“Under Armour has experienced extraordinary growth over the last three years where we have more than doubled our revenue from $2.3 billion to $4.8 billion and our teammate headcount from 8,000 to 15,000 worldwide. Amid a rapidly changing global retail landscape, we evaluated several areas of our business where we could improve efficiency and ensure increased agility to continue to deliver best-in-class product to serve the needs of today’s consumer. As a result, we are streamlining all aspects of our organization to improve our business operations and deliver against our long-term strategic goals. As a part of this new alignment, a workforce reduction will impact approximately 2 percent of our global workforce. As we execute against these difficult and necessary steps to evolve from good to great operations, our vision remains the same – making all athletes better through passion, design and the relentless pursuit of innovation.”

About the restructuring plan from an Under Armour press release:

Under Armour’s Board of Directors has approved a restructuring plan to more closely align its financial resources to support the company’s efforts to better serve the evolving needs of the changing consumer and customer landscape.

“As we stand up our category management structure within a consumer-led approach, we intend to meaningfully increase our go-to-market speed and amplify our digital capabilities,” continued Plank. “We’ve identified a number of areas to enhance our operational capabilities, drive process improvement and gain greater efficiencies. We remain steadfast in driving and building our brand while shifting our operational focus to become more return-on-investment and cost of capital centric – institutionalizing discipline to deliver more consistent, long-term shareholder value.”

In conjunction with this plan, the company expects to incur total estimated pre-tax restructuring and related charges of approximately $110-130 million in fiscal 2017, including approximately:

  • Up to $70 million in cash related charges, consisting of up to: $25 million in facility and lease terminations, $15 million in employee severance and benefits costs, and $30 million in contract termination and other restructuring charges; and,
  • Up to $60 million in non-cash charges comprised of approximately $20 million of inventory related charges and approximately $40 million of intangibles and other asset related impairments.

While revenue was up for Under Armour in the second quarter, the company experienced an operating loss. From the press release:

Second Quarter Review

  • Revenue was up 9 percent to $1.1 billion, up 8 percent currency neutral.
    • Revenue to wholesale customers rose 3 percent to $655 million and direct-to-consumer revenue was up 20 percent to $386 million.
    • A dynamic and promotional retail environment in North America continued to temper results with revenue in line with last year’s same period. Outside North America, the strong momentum continued with international revenue up 57 percent (up 54 percent currency neutral), representing 22 percent of total revenue. Within our international business, revenue in EMEA was up 57 percent (up 53 percent currency neutral), up 89 percent in Asia-Pacific (up 87 percent currency neutral) and up 10 percent in Latin America (up 9 percent currency neutral).
    • Apparel revenue increased 11 percent to $681 million including strength in men’s and women’s training, and golf. Footwear revenue was down 2 percent to $237 million, against last year’s same period which was up 58 percent due to significant strength in basketball sales. Accessories revenue increased 22 percent to $123 million with strength in men’s and women’s training, and youth performance.
  • Gross margin declined 190 basis points to 45.8 percent as benefits from channel and product mix were offset by inventory management initiatives, changes in foreign currency rates, and higher air freight in connection with our enterprise resource planning (ERP) system implementation, which impacted the timing of shipments to certain key customers.
  • Selling, general and administrative expenses increased 10 percent to $503 million, or 46.2 percent of revenue (up 40 basis points), due to continued investments in the direct-to-consumer, footwear and international businesses.
  • Operating loss was $5 million. Including other interest and expense, there was a net loss of $12 million in the second quarter and a $0.03 loss in diluted earnings per share.
  • Inventory increased 8 percent to $1.2 billion.
  • Cash and cash equivalents increased 37 percent to $166 million.

“Our second quarter performance validates the strength of our multiple growth levers to deliver solid results in today’s dynamic global environment,” said Under Armour Chairman and CEO Kevin Plank in the press release. “More than doubling our business over the last three years has required significant investments and resources to build our brand. We are utilizing 2017 to ensure that operations across our diverse portfolio of sport categories, distribution channels and geographies are optimized as we are building a stronger, faster and smarter company.”

Under Armour expects 9 to 11 percent net revenue growth in 2017, according to its 2017 outlooks.

Under Armour hired Patrik Frisk as its new President and COO in July.

Under Armour, which is currently headquartered at Tide Point in Locust Point, is planning a new 50-acre, 3.9 million sq. ft. campus at the former Port Covington Shopping Center. Under Armour gave the following statement to Baltimore Business Journal:

Under Armour spokeswoman Diane Pelkey said that the first phase of a 3.9 million-square-foot development for a global corporate centerpiece at Port Covington “will progress as required to accommodate this pace.”

“Under Armour is maximizing the value and efficiency of its existing portfolio of assets, including Tide Point and Port Covington,” said Pelkey, senior vice president for communications for Under Armour. “This direction is consistent with UA’s strategic approach, where the company is focusing investment in its core business growth and expansion. UA remains committed to Baltimore and the future expansion in Port Covington.”

Under Armour completed what it calls “Phase Zero” in January 2016. This included the conversion of the former Sam’s Club into Building 37, a 170,000 sq. ft. office, café, and amenity space. The former Walmart has also been used for Under Armour sample sales.

Phase One was expected to begin in 2017 but a construction start date has not yet been announced. This phase will feature buildings, totaling more than 500,000 sq. ft. of space, and a 1,500-space parking garage, which will be expanded to 5,000 spaces in the future. The buildings include two nine-story office buildings totaling more than 300,000 sq. ft. of space, and two one-story “plinths” adjacent to the buildings. Under Armour will also construct a new visitor center.

Under Armour’s campus is part of a $5.5 billion, 266-acre proposed redevelopment of Port Covington by Kevin Plank’s Sagamore Development Company.

New Locust Point Sign Installed on Fort Avenue

0
0

There is a new Locust Point sign at the northeast corner of Fort Ave. and Lawrence St. This replaces a brick and wood sign that stood for many years before it was removed during the construction of Anthem House. The new sign was designed by Ronnie Younts of Younts Design Inc. and was installed this month by Triangle Sign & Service. It is part of the Anthem House project by Bozzuto, Solstice Partners, and Warhorse Cities.

The sign has a large cement base with a black metal stencil that reads Locust Point. The sign also says Fort McHenry in black metal letters on the base. It is adjacent to a tree pit which will uplight the sign.

Younts told SouthBMore.com the sign was designed to honor Locust Point’s industrial past and is built with heavy-duty materials to withstand wear and tear. The sidewalks where the sign sits were reopened to the public earlier this year.

The nine-story Anthem House includes 292 apartments, 449 parking spaces, and 20,000 sq. ft. of ground floor retail.

The building also features a mural along Key Hwy. by Annapolis-based artist Jeff Huntington that honors Billie Holliday, Francis Scott Key, and Edgar Allen Poe.

South Baltimore Little League to Receive More Than $250,000 in Improvements Through Agreement with 28 Walker

0
0

South Baltimore Little League (SBLL) has reached an agreement with McHenry Row Developer Mark Sapperstein of 28 Walker for more than $250,000 in improvements to the baseball facility SBLL owns at 1100 E. Fort Ave. in Locust Point. The improvements, along with a five-year landscaping and maintenance agreement, are a donation from 28 Walker. SBLL’s facility is surrounded on three sides by McHenry Row which features retail, apartments, and offices, as well as a future hotel.

SBLL and 28 Walker worked for more than two years to put together this new agreement, which includes the following upgrades:

  • Walk-in gate between fields 2 & 3
  • New fencing and landscaping along Fort Ave.
  • New backstop and dugouts for field 2
  • New fencing around fields 1 & 2
  • Re-grading of fields 1 & 2 with all new sod and infield dirt
  • Scoreboard for field 2
  • Electricity to fields 2 & 3
  • Install batting cage on concrete pad
  • 8 new commercial grade picnic tables
  • 8 new commercial grade trash cans
  • Removal of old wood and concrete bleachers and replaced with new metal bleachers
  • Paving of gravel road leading to fields 3 & 4 and clean up of the same area
  • Removal of shipping containers and old carnival trailer currently used for storage and replaced with an 800 sq. ft. building

Work has already begun on these improvements and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. This will be the second round of improvements by 28 Walker, which added new turf, backstops, dugouts, fencing, and landscaping around the perimeter to fields 3 and 4 in 2015.

As part of the agreement, SBLL has granted an easement that allows 28 Walker to use eight feet of land behind fields 1 and 2 to install a new sidewalk along Porter St. “We wanted to build a sidewalk to give people another safe way to walk from Fort Avenue to Harris Teeter and the new Porter Street Apartments,” said Sapperstein.

“I really think this is going to be beneficial for our program and the families who utilize it,” said SBLL President Quinn Hren. “I’m happy we were able to come to an agreement. It took a long time and lot of volunteer hours by a lot of people to get this done.”

Volo City also uses the SBLL facility for adult and youth sports.

“We wanted to pull this all together for the kids and also the participants of Volo City,” said Sapperstein. “They are going to feel like they are playing in the Major Leagues. It’s a really good feeling to come here to work every day and watch the kids play. It’s rare to see fields in the middle of a real estate project. I take pride we were able to pull that together.”

He also noted that improvements will be visually appealing to the McHenry Row tenants, businesses, and visitors.

Sapperstein said he is eying a third round of improvements which could include a new club house for vending, as well as a larger on-site parking lot.

SBLL previously maintained the fields which were gifted to them by Coca-Cola in 1997. In 2013, Domino Sugar donated a new back stop and dugouts to field 1. Under Armour has also made donations including a scoreboard on field 1.

Porter Street Apartments will open at McHenry Row in September and new restaurant Iron Rooster is expected to open in the next few weeks. 28 Walker will also soon begin construction on a 126-room Marriott Hotel as well as a 60,000 sq. ft. office building, which is already fully leased.

Share Kitchen Opens in McHenry Row, Serves Food at Diamondback Brewing

Share Kitchen has opened in a 3,000 sq. ft. space in the first floor of the Banner Building at McHenry Row. The shared commercial kitchen is owned by chefs Nikki Marks and Brian Mathias. Marks owns the MindGrub Café food truck, formerly Madame BBQ, and Mathias owns Bistro Lunch Box. Marks is also the owner of Madame Cours de Cuisine where she teaches cooking classes to students in the Baltimore area.

Marks discovered the commercial space with her husband Todd Marks, who is the president and CEO of MindGrub, a fast-growing technology company located in a 18,000 sq. ft. office in the upstairs of the Banner Building. Share Kitchen features a 90 sq. ft. walk-in refrigerator, commercial appliances, prep tables, storage, a large farm table, and couches. The space has concrete ceilings, columns, and floors that date back to when the building was used by Coca-Cola.

Joining Marks and Mathias at the commercial kitchen are Au Jus Solutions, a consulting company for the food industry; Rack House Bakers, whose flagship item is a whiskey cake made with Sagamore Spirit; and food truck WOLO. Share Kitchen has room to accommodate additional businesses.

Along with using the commercial kitchen for the food businesses, Share Kitchen will also provide a nightly menu at Diamondback Brewing Company’s tap room, which is located right next door. Currently a member of Share Kitchen is taking orders at Diamondback, but a digital kiosk will be installed in the future for patrons to use to order food. Marks told SouthBMore.com that chefs at Share Kitchen will take turns creating a weekly menu.

Share Kitchen will also host private dining events and Marks will be using the space to host cooking classes for kids and adults.

Marks is working with 28 Walker, the owner of McHenry Row, to book food trucks at Share Kitchen on Fridays and during events.

Abbey Fundraising for a Texas Business

Abbey Burger Bistro is hosting a fundraiser for two Hurricane Harvey causes. From its Facebook event:

Very excited to host a fundraiser for those devastated by Harvey at Abbey Burger Fells Point and Abbey Burger Bistro.

We will be donating to two places.

Half will go to locally owned 495 Chesapeake Eats in Rockport, Texas. Chesapeake Eats was located in Rockport, Texas which, as you know, was located in the eye of Hurricane Harvey.

The other half will go to KW Relief via KW Cares. 100% of the money goes to victims. They already have a command center and have helped 200+ families already.

Next Wednesday the Abbey Burger Bistro in Fells Point and Federal Hill will donate $4 out of every $6 Deep Eddy Drink that we serve.

Please stop by to help support the victims of Harvey, in particular KW Cares and the owners of Chesapeake Eats as they rebuild after the hurricane.

Thank you,

Royal Farms Fried Chicken Highlighted by Food & Wine

Food & Wine recently published an article titled, ’10 Gas Station Foods Across the Country That Are Worth the Detour,’ and Baltimore’s Royal Farms made the list. From the article:

Royal Farms Fried Chicken

If you live in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia or Pennsylvania, you have the distinct privilege of enjoying some of the best fast-food fried chicken à la gas station in the form of Royal Farms. This Southern gas station chain is famous for their crispy fried chicken, flaky dinner rolls and breaded potato wedges known as “western fries.” If a glance at chicken-filled buffet trays glowing golden under the heat lamp alongside lotto tickets and Lays chips puts you off, check yourself and just order it already. Locations abound, and some are even coming to New Jersey soon.

PJ’s Pub is officially closing its doors this week after 33 years of serving students of Johns Hopkins University and the Charles Village community.

Owner Jerry Smith is ready to retire, and HomeSlyce Pizza Bar is eying the property as a potential new location.

The pub has occupied the bottom floor of 3333 N. Charles St. since it opened in 1984. Overtime, it became a legendary hangout for generations of JHU students.

HomeSlyce owner Haluk Kantar told Baltimore Business Journal that “the deal isn’t done yet.”

Mounted Police Unit Coming to Hollins Market

Baltimore Police Department’s horses could soon make their home at the B&O Railroad Museum in Pigtown/Hollins Market. From The Baltimore Sun:

Officials from Baltimore and the B&O Railroad Museum announced a joint effort on Monday to raise $2.5 million in charitable donations to build a new stable for the nation’s oldest continuously operating police mounted unit.

The Baltimore Police Department’s mounted unit, founded in 1888, consists of seven horses that are deployed for crowd control and to community events throughout the year. It now operates out of a former car dealership downtown.

The plans announced Monday — which Mayor Catherine Pugh said were “a very long time coming” — propose a state-of-the-art stables and educational facility to be constructed on the museum’s 40-acre historic property in West Baltimore, just off S. Stricker Street and a short ride from the museum on the old rail tracks it still operates.

Rye Street Tavern Opens

Rye Street Tavern, a 13,000 sq. ft. restaurant and event space, has opened at Sagamore Spirit distillery in Port Covington. It is headed up by Chef Andrew Carmellini of the New York-based NoHo Hospitality Group. The restaurant will focus on Chesapeake Bay-area foods and Sagamore Spirit. It employs 200 individuals.

Iron Rooster Opens

Iron Rooster has opened in a 7,000 sq. ft. space at McHenry Row in Locust Point. The space, which was previously subdivided, was the former home of The Greene Turtle and Piaza.

Iron Rooster opened its first location in Annapolis almost three years ago, opened a location in Canton in 2015, and a location in Hunt Valley in 2016. Iron Rooster focuses on “breakfast all day” with dishes including fried chicken and waffles, homemade pop tarts, benedicts, omelets, pancakes, waffles, and French toast. Traditional lunch and dinner entrées include sandwiches such as pulled pork, as well as country fried meatloaf, chicken pot pie, and shrimp and grits.

Two Pigtown Businesses Close

Dominican Beauty Center 2 has closed at 776 Washington Blvd. in Pigtown. The space has a ‘for lease’ sign hanging on the facade.

Charm City Wings & Waffles has also closed at 807 Washington Blvd. Ben Hyman of Pigtown Main Street told SouthBMore.com that a new tenant will soon be announced for the space.

New Sports Bar Coming to The Gallery

Bunzzz Sports Bar & Grill will be opening at The Gallery mall in the Inner Harbor. From Baltimore Business Journal:

Bunzzz Sports Bar & Grill will offer American fare like hamburgers, salads and French fries, but with a twist: diners will be able to choose from a variety of different buns to top their burgers.

The restaurant, which will open in a vacant space previously occupied by Brooks Brothers on the first floor of the mall, plans to offer 10 different kinds of buns, said co-owner Angela Washington-Tallitsch. Options might include gluten-free rolls, Hawaiian-themed buns with Maui onions and other varieties based on classic breads like whole wheat, sesame and rye. There will also be a dessert “Cinna-bun” on the menu.

Baltimore Bike Share Currently Suspended

Baltimore Bike Share is temporarily shutting down its service, including several stations in South Baltimore. From The Baltimore Sun:

Baltimore is temporarily shutting down its $2.36 million bike-share program, which has suffered so many thefts and maintenance backups that most of the bicycles are out of service.

Baltimore Bike Share will close Sunday and reopen Oct. 15 to provide time for the installation of additional locking equipment on the bicycle docks and to prepare for an overdue expansion of the system, city officials said Tuesday.

From another article in The Baltimore Sun:

The manufacturer of the $2.36 million Baltimore Bike Share system said his company has never experienced the level of theft that caused officials to announce a temporary shutdown of the program to allow additional locking devices to be installed to the bike docks.

The original locks on the bike stations were overwhelmed by thieves ripping the bicycles out at an unprecedented pace, said Alain Ayotte, CEO of Bewegen Technologies, the Canadian manufacturer.

“We don’t have this issue anywhere else, not at this level,” Ayotte said Wednesday. “Our locking system is recognized [as] very, very up to industry standard, but due to the issues that occurred in Baltimore this summer, we did add additional security.”
